El Progreso, Honduras. “Ahora ya no tengo que pedir lo que necesito. Lo obtengo yo misma”. Esas emotivas palabras resumen los logros de Mavelyn Suyapa Berrio Hernández, quien a sus 19 años de edad se ha convertido en una joven exitosa y empoderada por medio de su experiencia en el programa Jóvenes Constructores.
Cuando por invitación de una joven promotora fue con su prima a la sede de Jóvenes Constructores de Palermo en el Centro Técnico Loyola de El Progreso, Mavelyn no imaginaba cómo su vida cambiaría para bien en apenas un par de meses. Como en el caso de muchas y muchos jóvenes transformados por nuestro socio del proyecto Senderos Juveniles de Centroamérica, Fe y Alegría.
En este programa líder de empleabilidad juvenil, Mavelyn descubrió muchas posibilidades de mejorar y, sobre todo, encontró atención a sus problemas y necesidades, “las y los maestros estaban en las buenas y las malas”, recuerda, “nos enseñaron a abrir nuestra propia empresa. Las clases eran muy buenas”.
Con los conocimientos adquiridos y su aplicación al estudio aprendió a preparar café de calidad. Desde hace seis meses trabaja en la cafetería Coffee D’Altamira en El Progreso, donde en su trabajo de barista prepara toda la gama de cafés fríos y calientes Mavelyn descubrió talentos y habilidades que permanecían ocultos: Jóvenes Constructores da a las mujeres como ella la oportunidad de descubrirse como emprendedoras y seres humanos capaces ya que el programa fomenta el empoderamiento de las mujeres. Ahora no hay límites para estas jóvenes que dedican día a día su futuro.
“La vida tiene tropiezos, pero ahora acá estoy”
Casada desde hace cuatro años, Mavelyn reconoce el valor de la disciplina y el estudio constante que le permitió alcanzar una de las muchas metas que ahora tiene en su vida. “Hay tropiezos en la vida, pero míreme: acá estoy”, sonríe en su nuevo trabajo. “Algunos compañeros se salieron del programa, pero a los que se quedan los motivo para que sigan adelante”.
Su jefa, Alma Ruiz, está satisfecha con la rápida adaptación al ambiente y el sistema de trabajo en la cafetería y con los conocimientos que Mavelyn trajo desde su formación en Jóvenes Constructores. “Está siempre dispuesta a aprender, es accesible y respetuosa. Se lleva muy bien con sus colegas”, dice su jefa. Aunque Mavelyn entró como practicante en Coffee D’Altamira, su desempeño fue tan bueno que le ofrecieron un puesto permanente.
Después de su paso por Jóvenes Constructores, para Mavelyn vivir significa no dejar nunca de crecer y obtener más logros y ahora sueña con tener su casa y negocio propio. No olvida a quienes le abrieron nuevos senderos de oportunidades: “Me siento muy bien en mi trabajo, muy agradecida con el programa Jóvenes Constructores porque si no fuera por ellos no estaría acá”.

Mavelyn Berrios: Youthbuild Changed Her Life
El Progreso, Honduras. “Now I don’t have to ask for what I need. I get it myself”. Her words sum up the achievements of Mavelyn Suyapa Berrios Hernández, a 19-year-old who has achieved success and empowerment through her experience in YouthBuild.
When a young promoter invited her and her cousin to the YouthBuild headquarters at the Loyola Technical Center in Palermo, El Progreso, Madelyn could not have foreseen how her life was to change for good in just a couple of months.
As many young people transformed by our partner in the Youth Pathways Central America, Fe y Alegría and YouthBuild project, Mavelyn was driven partly by curiosity and partly by chance.
In this leading program for youth employability, Mavelyn found many ways of improving herself and, above all, she found attention to her problems and needs, “teachers were by my side through good and bad,” she recalls, “we were taught to open our own businesses. Classes were very good.”
She studied hard and eventually learned how to prepare quality coffee. Six months ago she started to work as a barista for the Coffee D’Altamira cafeteria in El Progreso, where she prepares a wide array of hot and cold beverages.
Madelyn discovered in herself talents and abilities that were hidden: through the promotion of female empowerment, YouthBuild gives women like Mavelyn the chance to become entrepreneurs and skillful human beings. There are no more barriers between these young people and their future.
“I Stumbled, But Never Gave Up”
Mavelyn, who got married four years ago, knows the value of discipline and constant study that enabled her to reach one of her many goals. “I stumbled, but never gave up”, she smiles in her new workplace. “Some of my friends left the program, but I tell those who remain that they have to keep up the pace”.
Her boss, Alma Ruiz, says she’s happy with the way Mavelyn adapted herself quickly to a new work environment and with the knowledge that she brought from YouthBuild. “She’s always ready to learn, easygoing and respectful. She gets along very well with her workmates”. Although Madelyn came as a practitioner, her performance was so good she was offered a permanent position.
Her YouthBuild experience changed her view of life: now she thinks living means to never cease to grow and to achieve more. She now dreams of having a home and a business of her own. And she has not forgotten those who opened up new paths for her: “I feel great at work. I’m grateful to YouthBuild because if it wasn’t for them I
wouldn’t be here.”
